Global Missions

1. Make Disciples of Jesus Christ

First UMCIn mission we:

• Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed in more than 125 countries.
• Support missionaries who work with partner and indigenous churches and annual conferences to witness to the Gospel in multiple ways, such as through both service and evangelization in Chile, Liberia, Nepal, Russia, and Alaska.
• Facilitate disciple-making partnerships among clergy and laity in the Cτte d’Ivoire called to ministries of evangelism in Cameroon and Senegal.
• Provide theological training and Christian education materials for pastors and lay leaders in emerging United Methodist churches, as in Cambodia, Honduras, and Latvia.
• Work with annual conferences and special denominational plans to develop new Christian fellowships among ethnic and racial groups in the United States.


2. Strengthen, Develop, and Renew Christian Congregations and Communities

First UMCI
n mission we:

• Develop ministries among growing Brazilian communities in the United States, in partnership with the Methodist Church of Brazil.
• Assist newly organized congregations to begin their lives with plans to plant new churches themselves, as in Thailand, Kazakhstan, and the United States.
• Grant scholarships to young-adult leaders around the world from ethnic and racial communities, enabling them to study and then return to leadership opportunities in their home churches and communities.
• Promote cooperative partnerships that strengthen and affirm the vital witness of town and country and small membership churches.
• Build networks through which more than 100,000 mission volunteers a year forge links within the global church, and perform ministries of healing and church and community development.


3. Alleviate Human Suffering

First UMCI
n mission we:

• Respond with compassion to natural and human-created disasters, such as tsunamis in South Asia, hurricanes along the US Gulf Coast, earthquakes in Pakistan, and war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, helping individuals and families reclaim their lives and communities.
• Resource the growing network of congregations in Africa, Europe, and the United States seeking to prevent alcohol and drug abuse, and respond with compassion and love to those in recovery.
• Provide shelter, food, clean water, and agricultural equipment to refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan
.• Offer job training and microenterprise grants, as in the Philippines and China, that empower poor families through programs that are models for implementation elsewhere.
• Assist women to end the cycle of domestic abuse through support of the Navajo United Methodist Center in Farmington, New Mexico, one of 103 National Mission Institutions.


4. Seek Justice, Freedom, and Peace

First UMCI
n mission we:

• Educate and mobilize United Methodists to confront and neutralize racial and gender injustice locally and globally.
• Promote fair and equal treatment of migrants, whether in Japan, East Africa, Germany, Mexico, or the United States.
• Involve young adults worldwide in forging links between personal Christian faith and justice issues, ranging from the treatment of women workers in Hong Kong to peace in the Middle East.
• Work with local congregations and other partners to address economic and social conditions that foster conditions of poverty, as in Macedonia, Uganda, Bolivia, and Oklahoma.
