“The Tie That Binds”
Testimony Sharing from Alvina Baum on Mother’s Day
Looking back over my years as a member of and worshiper in this lovely church, I am very aware that this is the place where many of the most special times of my life occurred. Although I do not live in Millville, I joined the First Church family in the 1970s.
My name is Alvina Baum, I answer to Alvina, Mrs. Baum, Mom to five, Mother-in-law to five, Mom-Mom to eight and G-Mom-Mom to five.
Three of my children were married here, Two grandchildren were baptized and grew up attending Sunday School here. They had caring teachers while learning lessons to be remembered. I am forever grateful for the lifelong friends I have made here.
This is also a place of service. My late husband, Dick Baum, was recognized and will be remembered as a long serving trustee. His devotion is evidenced by the cross he once built for an Easter service that now hangs in the front of Reeves Hall, beautifully backlit to add a new dimension. Thanks to the current trustees and workmen for that.
First church has been a place of service for me as well. I have served as Lay Leader, Chair of the Administrative Board, President of United Methodist Women, and Adult Sunday School teacher to name a few. My last job as a money counter was spent among some of those never to be forgotten friends.
Like any family, we have had our ups and downs. This has been an unusually difficult time for all of us. Trying to adapt to the changes caused by a worldwide pandemic and the serious illness of our Pastor Tom Stark.
We have lost precious friends over the years. Now by incorporating the congregation of our neighboring Trinity Church, we have enhanced the experiences of both as well as establishing a care center for the homeless.
On this very special day to honor Mothers, if you were fortunate enough to be raised by a loving, caring Mom, Step-Mom or Foster Mom, you have been blessed; lacking that, I pray that God provided for you in other ways. My Mother died when I was seven so I experienced that loss.
First Methodist Church is a haven where we all can learn to learn, love, and grow.
Thanks be to God for the tie that binds us all in Christian love.
